Bostik safe at Palma de Mallorca

Friday October 31st 2008 News RSS

After the Rolex Middle Sea Race in Malta, Bostik is now heading towards the port of Caen (Normandy - France) 2,250 nautical miles away (4,200 km). Yann Clavier (boat captain) is at the head of this ultimate test, sailing the first unit of the Veolia Oceans® series for the SolOceans back to her starting point. Her arrival there is scheduled on Monday 17 November. The sailor Franck Ferey is aboard. The famous sailor and mountaineer Eric Loizeau will join them next Tuesday. But last Wednesday, just when Bostik was sailing facing a 30-knot wind, she was suddenly lain down by a gust of wind, something the Mediterranean Sea is well known for. In only a few seconds, the breeze got stronger going from force 7 to force 9. Whilst the Solent jib (North Sails 3DL) had sailed more than 28,000 nautical miles - 52,000 km (a circumnavigation represents 26,000 nautical miles - 48,000 km) without a single damage - which shows the amazing quality of the North Sails sail of the Veolia Oceans® one-design - two tears of about one metre each appeared on the flapping sail just when the crew was righting the boat. As a consequence, Bostik is putting in at Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics until tomorrow Sunday 1 November. Let’s remark that this violent gale has decimated the port of Andraxt on the western part of Mallorca where about fifty cruising yachts have been damaged, included some yachts completely destroyed.

40 to 45 knot breeze (Force 9) - October 31st, 2008 Bostik sailing with two reefs in the mainsail and the staysail in a 40 to 45 knot breeze (Force 9).
