Construction of the Oceanic One Design® boats
of the SolOceans

Monday September 11th 2006 News RSS

Yvan Griboval, idea man and manager of the first equal opportunity single-handed round the world (France - New Zealand - France) oceanic race i.e. the SolOceans, has entrusted the Technologie Marine Society run by Charlie Capelle, with the construction in Saint Philibert (la Trinité-sur-Mer - France) of the hull and deck tooling of the sixteen-metre Oceanic One Design® monohulls, whose costs are controlled.

The construction of the Oceanic One Design® (registered trademark) monohulls designed by the Finot-Conq Group in consultation with Michel Desjoyeaux thus starts a little ahead of the planning that was presented during the press conference at the French Sailing Federation (FFVoile) last June 15th.

Charlie Capelle, renowned for over twenty years for the high accuracy of his moulds intended for offshore racing multihulls or monohulls, as well as those intended for mass produced series units, is therefore in charge of the construction of the moulds of the hull and of the deck of the one-design signed Jean-Marie Finot of the Finot-Conq Group. Please note that this agency has been dominating the naval architecture sector for the last thirteen years now, with regards to oceanic monohulls intended for single-handers. Indeed, the one-offs Finot-Conq has designed have actually won the four last Vendée Globe races (single-handed, without assistance, non-stop round the world race that runs every four years).

In the very concept of the SolOceans, it is planned that each chain link of the organization of the event is to be controlled, from the definition of the Oceanic One Design® to the broadcast of the race. This total control will guarantee cost restrictions and favour the small firms that will sponsor one of the competing boats - especially at a time where inflation is dashing as far as one-off single-handed racers are concerned.

It is in this spirit that a society is being created: CAFITECH (CArbon FIber TECHnology) has the vocation of building, marketing and ensuring the maintenance of the Oceanic One Design® fleet. Christian Brit, well-known specialist of pre-preg carbon constructions will be at the head of the production of this entity, totally dedicated to the building and the maintenance of the Oceanic One Design® monohulls.

Since the aim is to have build within the allotted time, twelve to fifteen one-design monohulls ready to line-up on the starting line of the first SolOceans October 25th 2009, CAFITECH will probably, in the weeks to come, temporarily set up on a site propitious to the quick start of the mass production.

Indeed, in order for the first hull to be ready to build next January according to the initial schedule, we should start fitting out the building with appropriate facilities (oven and paint cab) within two months.
